October 1, 2013 was her first “official” day as our
new full-time Advancement and Community Relations Coordinator…but some of you may
have already had the pleasure of meeting her. Over the last couple
of months, Jana has been volunteering around the campus, getting to know more
about our mission.
She comes to us after many years serving as Program Officer
at Rockwell Fund, a Houston-based philanthropy that has been supporting
Brookwood for some time. In that position, Jana first became acquainted
with our citizens and has felt drawn to help them since her first visit here 15
years ago.
As Vivian has shared with some departments already, Jana
will be working with my supervision and joins our Office of Advancement (this
is a new term we are using to describe a broader scope of work of the
Development Department).
Her first major assignment will be to help us launch our
next multi-year capital campaign which includes building a new
enterprise/education facility (to accommodate our growing citizen workforce and
providing better training venues for staff and Outreach visitors), two
residential groups homes, improvements to the campus infrastructure, developing
additional resources for staff development, growing our endowment funds, and
expanding our Outreach to serve more adults with special needs. To help
us meet potential donors to the capital campaign, Jana will be introducing Brookwood’s
mission to many of her personal and professional friends in the greater Houston
philanthropic community and beyond.
Jana will also be helping on several other fronts:
- With Yvonne and Vivian, she will be coordinating the
development of a book about Brookwood with Bright Sky Press---a
publication date has been set for late spring/early summer 2014;
- She will assist in the further development and
operations of growing Outreach program, serving as a liaison for
organizations seeking information about the Brookwood model and/or
programs;
- Since she is gifted in helping people make connections,
Jana will also be available to assist new families with citizens joining
Brookwood (aka Citizen Family Liaison), helping them learn about the
various resources and opportunities provided by our mission;
- We also want to grow our multi-faceted volunteer
program, so we have asked her to conduct a brief needs-assessment with our
departments and research how other successful non-profits engage
volunteers.
