Brookwood's Resident "Grandpa" and his loyal companion, April, making the rounds...

Our own "Grandpa," Harold Hyman, makes daily rounds with his sidekick, April, at Brookwood.  Grandpa visits with the citizens and staff each day, and leads several book groups with the citizens during the week.  His granddaughter, Rebecca, lives at Brookwood in the Weekley Home.

Meet Richard...

Richard was born in 1970 in Florida, where he attended school until he graduated.  His family relocated to Houston in 2002 and he became a Brookwood citizen.  He currently lives at the Inn, with his expanded family.  “The Inn is great,” said Richard, “because it’s fun and has all of the things I like to do there.”

Richard currently works in the Clay Shop and the CafĂ© and recently helped with the Poinsettia planting in the Horticulture department.  His parents, Karen and Richard, volunteer at least twice a week in the Brookwood Horticulture Department and Stonecasting Shop, working with the citizens.  (“Thank you, thank you, thank you!)
When Richard is not working, he enjoys watching Nascar driver #29-Kevin Harvick race.  He also likes to play PlayStation 3 games, especially Nascar Inside Line.

Richard also enjoys performing in Brookwood shows and was the Narrator of last year’s Open House play, The Night Before Christmas.  He likes doing activities on Saturday with the many volunteer groups that visit.  Richard’s favorite color is black, and he likes polar bears "because they chase elephant seals."

We are so happy to have you as a Brookwood family member, Richard.   We are so proud of your hard work!

Our Citizens Grow Stronger Through Physical Therapy...

One of our core values at Brookwood is Continual Improvement and we are proponents of physical fitness here as well.  With that in mind, I visited the Dr. John Milligan Memorial Physical Therapy Center, which is located conveniently down the hall from my desk in the Reynold's Building. :)Brookwood's Physical Therapist, Rachel Parker-Jones, worked with several of our citizens during my visit today.  They were busy exercising on the equipment donated to us by Kappa Kappa Gamma!  (Thank you so much!)

If you have ever wondered what they do in PT at Brookwood, just keep reading...

Jeff worked on the arm bicycle.

Nancy stayed upright at her "Standing Table."

Jeff helped Nancy with her iPad game...it makes the standing more fun!

Citizen Gail pedaled strongly on the exercise bike, with PT Rachel nearby.

Chris stood  at the parallel bars to increase his strength and balance.

Rachel walked up and down the halls with Dean.

And demonstrated the role of the PT very well...safety first!

I learned that stretching those muscles is so important!

And Nancy got stretched out, too, and said it felt "GOOD!"

I got to see how a person gets into position for the Standing Table.
First, Rachel fastened the support strap onto Suann...

Then she pushed a button and the belt was tightened
to help lift Suann into a standing position.

Then, with the help of an iPad,
the Standing Frame becomes a little more fun!

And finally, Suann and PT Rachel share a laugh. :)

Brookwood Medical...Providing Care on the Brookwood Grounds!

We are so fortunate to have a wonderful resident medical staff and clinic at Brookwood, where our citizens receive care from the nurses, therapists, counselors and visiting doctors and dentists, as well as preventive screenings for skin cancers and other things.
Dr. Hyman, Brookwood's resident "Grandpa," stops by the
Clinic to greet citizens L.B. and Meade.
