So Cool!

So, the State Inspector comes by today for an all-campus annual inspection...always by surprise, and usually on a busy Friday.  The first thing she says to me while I am sitting at the Reception Desk (filling in at lunch time)...

"I can't wait to see your citizens today!"

How cool is that!

Texans Pep Rally Coming to Brookwood on September 24th!

Our Director of Spiritual Life and Citizens' Activities has been busy lately!  He has arranged
for three members of the Texans team, two cheerleaders and their mascot to visit
Brookwood for a Pep Rally with our Citizens on Tuesday, September 24th over the lunch hour!

Check out the pictures below, from Greg Glauser...

*********************************************************************************
And a little MORE information for our families from Greg...

We invite everyone o tplease join us and come ready to cheer among the citizens!

This is such a wonderful event and we want everyone to get ready, so we are asking citizens on this day to wear any Texans attire or dark blue shirt.  I even suggest parents see about buying a Texan
Shirt for their Brookwoodian, if possible.  Brad Tucker, father of day citizens Frank Tucker, is our great HERO in getting the Texans to come out to Brookwood and experience the TEAM WORK OF OUR CITIZENS.  Mustang Cat is his company and they are excited about this partnership with Texans and Brookwood Community.  There will be media out this day so please help everyone to look their best.  We invite all Home and Work Program Teachers and other staff and families to also join us also, since you are  all a big part of our Brookwood TEAM and we could use your support to CHEER on the Texans and Mustang Cat.

In the meantime, please help the citizens get to know the players and recognize their great skills.

The Team Members coming are

Randol Richard Bullock (born December 16, 1989) is an American football placekicker for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for Texas A&M University, and was recognized as the nation's top college football kicker and an All-American. He was selected by the Houston Texans in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Shane Lechler[1] (/ˈlÉ›klÉ™r/; born August 7, 1976) is an American football punter for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for Texas A&M University, and was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He has been named an All-Pro nine times during his career. Currently the NFL's all-time leader in career punting average, he is regarded as one of, if not the best, punter in NFL history.

A Big Hurrah for our Maintenance Department!

The scope of this Community Service Project for our partners in the oil & gas industry was rather larger than expected and the planned method of moving the boxes off of the delivery truck didn't pan out.  So, our Maintenance Department stepped up and got the job done (on a very hot day, too!)  Thank you to our Maintenance Team!

Work begins unloading the pallets from the delivery truck with the fork lift.

The boxes on their pallets all lined up and still shrink wrapped.

where the work had already begun stuffing the bags.

GREAT JOB ALL!

Working on the Citizens' Outreach Project...

Brookwood citizens were recently involved in an Outreach Program to our Community!
They helped our partners in the Oil & Gas Industry stuff bags for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) to distribute at their upcoming convention.

  Helping Our Community = Interdependence,

A Brookwood Core Value

Allison helped unload boxes.

Eileen and Christine helped with the assembly line to stuff items into the canvas bags.

Erin, Brian and Richard keep the line moving to fill those bags!

Way to work together, team!

Thank you Kappa Kappa Gamma!

The Kappa Kappa Gamma Charitable Foundation recently gave Brookwood a grant for purchasing a Panorex X-ray for taking panoramic x-rays in dental examinations.
Citizen Wilson Shudde was the first to use the new Panorex X-ray machine,
assisted by Dr. Douglass "Buddy" McClung and his team.  The patient
stands still while the machine moves around him, resulting in a panoramic x-ray.

We are so grateful for Kappa Kappa Gamma's support, for the medical personnel who make "house calls" at Brookwood and for the support of all of our benefactors!

Setting up the Cafeteria for lunch...Another Important Job at Brookwood!

Our citizens eat lunch in the Cafeteria every day during the work week.  Using methods from TEACHH (Treatment and Education for Autistic & Communication-Handicapped Children), adapted for use with our adults with disabilities by Carol Whitmore, Director of Education, each table has placemats unique to each citizen featuring their name, photograph, special dietary needs, acceptable beverages, and also pictures of items that that particular citizen likes (such as a football, movie star, mountain, or books.)  This serves as a visual cue for each citizen, but also provides a point of reference for the cafeteria servers or guests, who could easily start a conversation with that citizen about something they like from the pictures on that placemat.  (See photo below.)

This program works very well.  However, the Cafeteria (or "Cafetorium" as we call it) serves multiple purposes each day.  It is our auditorium for presentations.  It is our gathering room for citizen socials.  It is a work room for large projects.  It is where the staff breakfasts and volunteer luncheons happen.  Therefore, the placemats are constantly being removed and replaced with care, and that takes time and attention.  Also, the tables must be set up for the citizens' lunches Monday through Friday.  This important job is often performed by our citizens, who take great care in setting up the places each day for lunch. The following pictures show our citizen, Rick, setting up for lunch today.

Thanks Rick, you do great work for us here at Brookwood!
